THE BAT PUNCHER

Enough said ! ( Pipistrelle -small bat)

THE BAT PUNCHER

IT WAS AN EVENING QUITE EARLY

I WAS SITTING ALONE ON THE BED

MY MOOD WAS DARK AND SURLY

FROM THE RUBBISH THAT I’D READ.

WHEN THERE ACROSS MY SIGHT

A MYSTERIOUS DARK SHADOW FLEW.

JUST CAUGHT AGAINST FADING LIGHT

HOWEVER INSTINCTIVELY I KNEW

THAT NO MOTH COULD BE THAT SIZE

THOUGH AS FAR AS I COULD TELL

AND TO MY COMPLETE SURPRISE

I SAW A LITTLE BLACK PIPISTRELLE.

EVER ROUND AND ROUND IT WENT

FLITTING & FLYING OVER MY HEAD

I HOPED SOON IT WOULD BE SPENT,

AND EXHAUSTED FLOP ON TO THE BED.

A T-SHIRT I’D USE TO CLOSE THE TRAP,

OUT OF THE WINDOW AND BACK TO SKY.

BUT RECALLING HOW FOUL IS IT’S CRAP

AND THAT STILL ON DUVET IT DID NOT LIE,

THOUGHTS OF A BAT SHIT BEDROOM,

WITH A STENCH NO MAN COULD BEAR,

MADE DARK PLANS START TO LOOM

AS WITH MALICE I STARTED TO STARE.

HUNTER’S INSTINCT, A SUDDEN CALM

TELLING MYSELF IT’S A FLYING RAT.

A CURLED FIST AND A LIGHTNING ARM,

WHOOPS I’D PUNCHED A BAT !
