THE ILLUSION

This piece is inspired by contemplation on the Everett-Wheeler many worlds interpretation of quantum reality, now largely ignored in favour of M-theory,

Many-worlds implies that all possible alternate histories and futures are real, each representing an actual “world”. In layman’s terms, the hypothesis states there is a very large—perhaps infinite—number of universes, and everything that could possibly have happened in our past, but did not, has occurred in the past of some other universe or universes. When we die perhaps we continue to exist in other dimensions/worlds. A difficult concept to grasp, easier if you just call it heaven .

The illusion

I walked through a mirror one night,

and turning about I saw the back of

a head .

Was there another me,

a mirror stand in,

preserving mirror law.

Or had I been so quickly replaced,

and now had a different face.

I wondered should I go back,

and snap about saying caught you

imposter !

Proving the deceit of mirrors as

two different faces looked at

each other.

Who was there to see him, not I.

Perhaps I see only the face I want

to see or I am permitted to see.

Then I stepped back out, turned

and saw nothing .

  1. Mirrors do provide interesting thoughts to jostle with, Nigel. You do this cleverly here, with the well-chosen music creating exactly the right atmosphere for the mystery of your story. I’ve just written a poem on a vaguely similar theme myself.

  2. Interesting and thought provoking piece of poetry Nigel. I think I mentioned this previously, but it has gone through my mind, what if there is no beginning and end and our past exists in a parallel Universe? Do you ever get that feeling when you visit somewhere new and it feels you have been there before, in a different time. Maybe the mind playing tricks, but it does give food for thought.

    1. Absolutely Davy, I get that quite dramatically, as you say, it may be a trick of the mind yet since no one knows what the mind is, I’m open to all possibilities . It bemuses me that mainstream science regards such phenomenon as nonsense and then comes out with the many world theory which ok, has been replaced, but was ‘the’ most likely explanation . It has been suggested and this I do ponder a lot about, is mind having a direct effect on matter. We may in a sense al be gods, each of us contributing a bit to the whole with incalculable complexity. Sure would explain a lot.

      1. It is a fascinating subject Nigel and research into brain science is always providing different theories and answers. I like the bit about us all being Gods. I will drop that into the conversation with her indoors and update you.
