I WATCHED YOU – the essence of love 1

THE FIRST IN A TRILOGY ON THE NATURE OF LOVE

“Love is when watching her unobserved you suddenly realise you’re smiling.”                                                                                                                                                                                                         N P Smith

I WATCHED YOU

I watched you on the phone,

talking to your Mam,

laughing loud before being

washed with a serious look

as family fallouts made you

curl your lips.

When you got ready to go out,

drying your hair,

but always missing the back

and your endless looks in

the mirror, never quite certain

it was the right dress.

With a book, flipping the pages

so fast I couldn’t believe you

could possibly have read them.

And when you came home with

a new top, telling me

what a bargain it was before you

even opened the bag.

I watched you in silence

and found myself smiling.

  1. A wonderful love poem Nigel, the title itself conveys the love.
You see your beloved and all her idiosyncracies and smile and love her for it.
The greatest compliment anyone can be paid.
” drying your hair / but always missing the back”
and how she tells you it is a bargain before even opening the bag. 😊
    And you smile.
    Perfect. ⭐️
